Featured Rat

Diet

Rats need access to food all the time to allow them to free feed. In addition to them free feeding you will need to the cooked mix about 2x a week, fresh veggies 2-3x a week and fresh fruit 2x a week. This will ensure they have plenty of food at all times.

This is the mix listed on Camarattery's site.

Here is the recipe:

3 parts flaked barley (do not use pearled barely! Its too hard and will break teeth!)

1 part sun flower seeds

1/2 part oat groats (Steel cut oats).

1/4 part bird pellet non fruit flavor for medium birds. IE.. ZupreemHarrison'sKay Tee ExactRoudybush. Or the bird pellet from Excello. Or you can use calf manna from the fed store (I really like the calf mana). The recipe was actually made with it not a bird pellet.  I like rotate for variety. Or you can use meat bird builder from a feed store for chickens and or water foul. So many options!

1/4 part raw peanuts (either in the shell or out of the shell)

For nursing moms and babies up to 3 months:

1/4 part senior dog food of high quality.  Only natural ingredients please! I get dog food with no corn, molasses or alfalfa.

Sometimes I put Cheerio's, puffed rice and shredded wheat to add a little variety. Be sure to only use 1/4 part.

Fruits, Veggies, Herbs and Cooked Mix

My rats get green foods daily. And herbs so they can self medicate when they want it.

I don't reccomend iceberg lettuce because it literally has no food value. Its just water. But any other green or red leafy lettuces are great!

My Mix:

I only buy Organic.

1) 2 parts Rolled Oats. Not oatmeal or minute oats as its not as nutritious.

2) 2 parts  Millet

3) 3/4 part Brown Rice

4) 3/4 part Wheat Berries

5) 3/4 part Quonia

6) 3/4 part Refined Couscous

7) 3/4 part Raw Sunflower Seeds

8) 3/4 part Pearled Barley

9) 1/2 part Spit Peas any color

10) 1/2 part  Raisins

11) 1/2 part of dried cranberries

11) Cinnamon Powder, Nutmeg, All Spice. Note on Cinnamon, dump tons in there like 1-3 TBS spoons as desired. (Cinn is for circulation, libido and anti parasite can not be over done.)

Cooking Directions:

Stove top: In medium saucepan, bring 2-1/4 cups of water and 1 cup Cook Mix to a boil. Cover with tight fitting lid, reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir often. Remove from heat and let sit. Cool completely before serving.

Any dried fruits cranberries, blue berries, strawberries, apple slices, cherries. You can add these before cooking or mix it up to make different flavored batches. Make sure there is no sugar added!

Add your favorite veggies, fresh or frozen. I like to add frozen veggies to my cooked mix to help it cool faster.

You can store in the fridge for 4-5 days.

Adding supplements for more natural herbal health.

Many times we need to medicate our pets, or we want to build immune systems. The rats will eat it when mixed in the cook mix. Things I like to add

I like to add like a table spoon of granulated garlic in a pile in their food dish for them to free feed on. You can add it to the cooked mix but its very strong and will make the whole house smell of garlic.

All powered herbs or liquids get added to the cooked mix so it doesn't get inhaled.

Powdered Vitamins or Biotin

Wheat Germ Oil (Super Food) Best thing for skin and coat. (a must for hairless rats and great for the furred too)

Fish or Cod Liver Oil for the Omegas

My favorite for the immune and digestive system Kyo-Dophilus 9. 9 digestive enzymes. (This one is a must for my rats)

I also sometimes add just enough Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar to their water to make it slightly cloudy. I do this every other month or so. Click on the image to take you to their site for more info on how it helps pets

What Not to Feed

The only things you don't want to give the rats is onion, caffeine, mushrooms, cabbage, avocado seeds and peel. And male rats cannot have citrus fruit. Also Alfalfa as it stops rats digestion. If you give your rat junk food meaning cookies and cake. You will give them tumors. Those Yogi treats made for rats in the big pets stores is pure sugar. Be sure to stick with organic sugar free stuff. As sugar causes tumors.

When You Take a Baby Home

I have a 7 day guarantee on my rats as long as they are on the food they are used to when they go home. I cannot guaranty them if you are cold turkey switching them and not weaning them onto a new food. So you can either purchase some of my grain mix when you pick up the rats or make your own. I have the recipe here on this page.
